New Islington Footbridge, Manchester

A competition winning scheme for a new footbridge over the Rochdale Canal is now complete.

The bridge connects 3 crossing points in the context of the historic canal side warehouses of Ancoats and a new urban village, New Islington. The air-draft for canal traffic precluded structure beneath the bridge deck. Thus the primary bridge structure comprises a prismatic truss set above and to one side of the deck.

The truss is fabricated from hollow section steelwork and clad with laser cut steel sheet with a motif reminiscent of woven fabric and ripples on the canal.
